What are candidate species?

Candidate species refer specifically to plants or animals that are currently under consideration for designation as threatened or endangered under relevant legislation, such as the Endangered Species Act in the United States. These species have been identified for potential protection due to declining populations or habitats. The designation as a candidate does not mean that these species are officially classified as threatened or endangered yet; instead, it indicates that they occupy a category of concern and may warrant conservation actions.

In contrast, endangered and protected species are those that have already been formally designated as at risk and are covered by various conservation regulations, which is not the case for candidate species. Common species in their habitats do not fit the description of candidate species, as they are typically stable in population and have no immediate conservation concerns. Similarly, species that are thriving in the wild are generally not considered for reclassification because they do not require additional protective measures at this time.
